This year has been a fairly average year for TV
Story
It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their long-running rivalry comes to a head. Coincidentally, Aidan Turner had previously filmed at Chavenage House (The Priory in Rivals). The same location was also used to film Trenwith House in the BBC’s 2015 TV adaptation of Poldark.
Rivals stands out as an absolute highlight
It’s a multi-layered piece that definitely deserves a sequel. Conceptually it’s a soap opera, narratively a satire and stylistically a period piece. For once, the careful viewer will find a message there that isn’t a superficial or forceful push for political idealism, but a search for truth.
Rivals is funny, smart, cheeky and hilarious
No episode feels sloppy, unnecessary or forced; the story and characters build beautifully towards an extraordinary climax. The writing, the scenes, the lyrics and the direction all serve the greater good. The soundtrack appeals to every 80s kid.
The acting is a joy to watch
The always excellent David Tennant shines as the humanized villain, Alex Hassell as the antagonist. Victoria Smurfit and Aidan Turner make a believable, well-matched broken couple. The audience witnesses the rise of several new stars, especially Bella Maclean, who will be a name to look out for in the future.
