Writer/director Mitsuhiro Mihara’s plaintive 2023 father-daughter drama is a bit too obvious to compare favorably to Yasujiro Ozu’s family drama classics
Read more. In a story centered around Tatsuo, an elderly Onomichi tofu master, and his singularly devoted daughter Haru, Mihara clearly channels Ozu’s “late spring” and “early summer” in capturing the specificity of their close relationship.
The clownish moments felt like a different film than what was intended
The plot plods along as everyone eventually finds potential partners, but not before a requisite number of comedic scenes with stock characters are played out fairly broadly. Regardless, screen veteran Tatsuya Fuji plays Tatsuo with a grumpy élan, while Kumiko Aso provides attentive assistance as Haru.
For a film with similar sensibilities about the art behind unique Japanese food, I suggest watching Naomi Kawase’s “An (Sweet Bean)” from 2015
Fuji’s scenes with Kumi Nakamura as an ailing elderly woman were touching, though the A-bomb connections felt contrived to inject more pathos into the film.
